WalMart Can Choose Good Over Evil

To demonstrate that though this blog is called WalMart is Pure Evil, not everything that WalMart does is totally evil, here's a story about WalMart severing ties with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

And I learned that WalMart protects a square foot of land for every square foot of their stores (seems like a slightly crappy trade off but hey, it's a step in the right direction).
Wal-Mart’s decision to drop ALEC makes sense in the context of their successful “Acres for America” program.  Since 2005, Wal-Mart has partnered with the National Fish and Wildlife Federation in an effort to conserve an acre of land for every one occupied by a Wal-Mart facility.  As of January 2012, the project has protected 687,000 acres.
I must say that I am heartened by the speed with which these fake agencies are abandoned by large corporations once their misdeeds and twisted agendas become public. Yes, ALEC was funded for a long time and helped push many bits of legislation that are festering boils on the American landscape (Stand Your Ground laws being just one of their "successes") notwithstanding their attempts to force the instruction of climate change denial in our school systems.

The cynic in me thinks this was as much of band wagon jumping on by WalMart as it is any sign of a moral backbone in the retail behemoth. But hey, good news is good news either way. And the further emasculation and destruction of ALEC is a cause for celebration.
